Course Title: Contemporary Portraiture: A Global Lens on Painting the Head
Workshop Description:
This 5-week, in-person workshop is geared towards intermediate artists who want to expand their portrait painting practice beyond capturing a simple likeness. Blending traditional skills with contemporary approaches and global influences, students will focus on the human head as both a formal structure and a powerful subject of identity and expression.
Instead, participants will work from carefully selected photographic references and direct observation of their own reflection in mirrors. These sources will support a deeper exploration of form, volume, and spatial relationships, while encouraging students to view the head as an integral element of a broader visual composition.Through guided practice, students will explore how to interpret the head using basic shapes, defined planes, and energetic mark-making, laying the groundwork for a more deliberate and expressive approach to portrait painting.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have created a compelling series of portrait studies and developed greater confidence in global visual literacy.Ideal For:
Intermediate-level artists with foundational drawing and painting skills who are interested in developing a more personal, expressive, and globally-aware approach to painting.
